JAMB Sets Up Committee on Exam Malpractice

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has established a dedicated committee to examine instances of technology-enhanced malpractice identified during the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

While inaugurating the 23-member committee in Abuja on Monday, JAMB’s Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, raised alarms about the increasingly advanced methods of conducting exam fraud.

Oloyede indicated that the results of 6,458 candidates are currently under scrutiny for alleged participation in high-tech cheating.

“This year, we encountered numerous unusual incidents, and we believed it was prudent to broaden our resources.

“We trust that God has blessed this nation with abundant resources that we can utilize,” he mentioned.

He pointed out that malpractices have progressed from conventional tactics to “technologically advanced forms,” which involve various cases of biometric and identity fraud committed by certain accredited CBT centers and candidates.

Oloyede underscored the necessity for prompt action to protect the integrity of examinations.

“Examination malpractice is an issue we must combat with every ounce of determination we possess.

“This is because unchecked fraudulent practices can negatively impact several sectors and damage Nigeria’s reputation,” he stated.

The registrar revealed that while 141 instances of “regular” exam malpractice had been submitted to JAMB’s disciplinary committee, the new committee would address “extraordinary infractions,” which include image blending, false claims of albinism, finger pairing, and attempts to compromise the Local Area Network of specific CBT centers.

He enumerated the committee’s terms of reference to encompass investigating all instances of image blending, finger blending, fraudulent claims of albinism, and result falsehoods in the 2025 examination.

“Identify the techniques, trends, tools, and technologies employed in carrying out these infractions.

“Examine existing examination and registration regulations and propose enhancements,” he remarked.

Other duties include determining the guilt or innocence of each of the 6,458 suspected candidates, excluding those claiming albinism, whose results remain withheld, among other tasks.

“We have opted for a three-week timeline, as justice delayed equates to justice denied.

“In approximately four weeks, admissions will conclude. We believe that those proven innocent should have the chance to proceed,” he added.

In response, the committee chairman, Dr. Jake Epele, expressed gratitude for Oloyede’s guidance and pledged the committee’s commitment and focus on their responsibilities.

“Examination malpractice is not merely a violation of rules. It constitutes a direct attack on integrity, merit, and the future of our nation’s youth.

“The duty entrusted to us is thus a significant one. I am convinced that not everyone in this committee views it as just a job. It is a call from God Almighty.

“The call is to uphold the credibility of our examination system, restore public trust, and ensure that hard work and honesty remain the genuine routes to success,” he stated.

Committee members include Prof. Muhammad Bello, Prof. Samuel Odewummi, Prof. Chinedum Nwajiuba, Prof. Tanko Ishaya, Prof. Ibe Ifeakandu, and retired Police Commissioner Fatai Owoseni.

Additionally, Dr. Chuks Okpaka from Microsoft Africa and the president of the National Association of Nigerian Students are among other members.
