JAMB Exposes 9,460 Illegal Admissions Across 20 Nigerian Tertiary Institutions!

JAMB

A total of 9,469 admissions from 20 higher education institutions across the country have been identified as fraudulent by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for the 2024 academic year.

The board reported that these admissions took place outside the widely used Central Admission Processing System, commonly referred to as CAPS.

As per the list acquired from JAMB, Kano State University of Science and Technology had the highest number of fake admissions at 2,215, while Ladoke Akintola University of Technology had 1,215.

Other institutions include Gombe State University with 1,164; Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, 761; Federal University of Technology, Owerri, 534; Ambrose Alli University, 514; Igbinedion University, 365; Akwa-Ibom Polytechnic, 340; and the College of Nursing, National Orthopedic Hospital, Igbobi, 281.

Also mentioned are Achievers University with 267; Nigeria Police Academy, 263; Abia State Polytechnic, 256; Osun State University, 224; Federal University, Lafia, 189; Niger State Polytechnic, 182; Federal Polytechnic, Ida, 171; and Edo State Polytechnic, 166.

Additionally, there are Anchor University with 133, Michael and Cecilia Ibru University with 116, and the Federal College of Animal Health and Production Technology with 113.

CAPS was established to promote transparency and efficiency and serves as an online platform where prospective students can track and manage their admission status.

By centralizing the admission process, JAMB CAPS guarantees that all candidates are assessed fairly based on merit and the requirements of the institutions.

The main goal of JAMB CAPS is to simplify the admission process across tertiary institutions in Nigeria. It accomplishes this by enhancing transparency so candidates can easily monitor their admission status, ensuring applicants are evaluated according to uniform criteria.

Additionally, the system improves efficiency by allowing institutions to process admissions rapidly and ensuring candidates receive prompt updates regarding their application status.

Over time, the board has cautioned institutions against offering backdoor admissions to candidates outside of CAPS, stating that those who receive admission outside of it would be excluded from the compulsory National Youth Service Corps scheme.

Recently, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, reiterated a directive in Abuja during the 2025 policy meeting of JAMB, declaring all admissions conducted outside JAMB as unlawful.

He stated that institutions and individuals engaged in such activities would face prosecution and significant penalties.

“Any admission carried out outside of CAPS, regardless of its motivations, is deemed illegal.

“Both the institutions and the candidates participating in such arrangements will be held responsible.

“Possible penalties could include revocation of institutional assets and legal action against responsible officers or members of the governing council,” he affirmed.
