JAMB Disowns Admission of Alleged FUTA Graduate—Official Statement Released!

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has stated that it did not authorize the admission of Basola Jamiu Owodunni, a graduate of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, whose records, according to the board, were absent from its Central Admissions Processing System.

JAMB made this announcement in a statement on Sunday, signed by its Public Communication Adviser, Fabian Benjamin, in response to Basola’s claim on social media that the board invalidated his university admission seven years after he began his studies.

Basola reported that he took the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination in 2017 and gained admission to FUTA in 2018, where he studied civil engineering and graduated in 2024 with a cumulative grade point average of 4.41.

He explained that the problem arose after his final clearance, when he was informed by the student affairs office that his mobilization for the National Youth Service Corps had been rejected.

“I was advised to check my details on the JAMB matriculation list, which showed a fake admission,” he said.

Basola further mentioned that after several unsuccessful attempts to access his JAMB portal, he went to the JAMB office and was told he needed to be referred to the Department of State Services for investigation.

“After visiting the JAMB office without any resolution, I felt my only option was to submit myself to the DSS for questioning, hoping this would help speed up the process,” he explained.

He indicated that he spent many hours in the custody of the DSS and police before being released due to the intervention of a friend.

According to Basola in the video, a representative of FUTA’s admission office provided documents to the police indicating that his admission had been properly recommended by the university.

He stated the police assured him that a report would be forwarded to the Commissioner of Police in Abuja, but by the time he recorded his video, the JAMB headquarters had not yet responded.

Basola also mentioned that he had written letters to various officials at FUTA, including the registrar, vice-chancellor, and chairman of the admission committee, asking for their assistance.

“I feel powerless, and it seems my university officials are also unsure of what actions to take,” Basola remarked.

However, Benjamin, in the JAMB statement, remarked, “The Board does not have the power to propose or endorse candidates for admission. It only authorizes those put forward by the institutions.

“While there may be no contention regarding his attendance at the university in question, JAMB maintains that he is not recognized in its records as he did not adhere to the required process, and the board cannot facilitate his inclusion on the platform for visibility to the NYSC and other relevant parties.”

JAMB reiterated that Basola remains “an unknown entity to the Board regarding admission,” adding that “the notion of him being an orphan or from a less privileged background should not serve as an emotional appeal in this situation.”

The board also stated that Basola possessed a document that did not originate from its system and called on him to explain how it was obtained to help clarify his situation.

“This serves as a reminder that candidates should only accept admission offers that are initially processed through CAPS and printed accordingly,” the statement noted.

JAMB assured in its statement that it would provide support to Basola if he were found to comply with the law.

“One of our fundamental principles is to protect the rights of all candidates against exploitation, and we will not hesitate to assist Basola if he is found to be abiding by the law,” the statement concluded.
