“I Almost Resigned!” — JAMB Boss Oloyede Speaks on UTME Error Scare

Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), has revealed how he nearly resigned due to the pressure caused by the technical issues that occurred during the UTME in areas of Lagos State and the South-East.

This was disclosed by Oloyede during a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja on Wednesday that included state technical advisers, chief external examiners, and other important participants in the exam’s administration.

Oloyede stated, “My first instinct was to quit when this occurred, but I was told that the students would never forgive you because it would appear that you had abandoned them at such a time.”

Following the technical issues noted during the UTME’s administration, he rejected conspiracy theories directed at specific regions of the nation.

Oloyede emphasized that the UTME is not a test of academic ability or intelligence, but rather a placement exam. He explained, “Its goal is to rank applicants for a limited number of admission slots, not to assess a person’s intelligence.”

Oloyede vehemently denied allegations of administrative ineptitude or ethnic bias in response to mounting criticism and conspiracy theories over the testing procedure.

“I accept responsibility because it’s a sign of leadership, not because I failed. I had no idea that others were viewing the world via racial prisms. We have to get over this kind of profiling,” he said.

He commended the staff and candidates for their perseverance in the face of logistical challenges.

“We didn’t have much room. We were aware that kids might lose their chance if we continued to lament the difficulties,” he remarked.

JAMB said it is still dedicated to openness and equity in admissions, and the special mop-up exam is set to take place soon.
