Former WAEC Registrar Uwadiae calls on the Fed to support educational advancement
During the 70th birthday dinner hosted in his honor by colleagues and friends at Yellow Chilli, GRA, Ikeja, Lagos, former Registrar of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Dr. Iyi Uwadiae, urged the Federal Government to give education a top priority, stating that “it plays a pivotal role in a country’s advancement.” Uwadiae maintained that education is still the cornerstone of a nation’s economic growth.
He declared, “In order to stop its declining fortune, I am urging the Federal Government to give educational growth and development more priority by providing it with additional impetus.”
“There is no substitute for education; it is essential and serves as a basis for growth. It facilitates navigation for citizens.
“But regrettably, neither the government nor we are doing enough to advance education.”
Emphasizing the need for adequate planning and funding for education, the previous head of WAEC pleaded with the government to follow the recommendations of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organizations (UNESCO) about the yearly budgetary allocation for education development.
He stated that UNESCO had suggested that nations devote 15 to 20 percent of their resources to education, highlighting the significance of education on a worldwide scale.
Nigeria’s 2025 education budget of N3.52 trillion only accounts for 7.3% of the nation’s N49.7 trillion overall budget.
Recalling his dispute with a prior education minister who was dividing education into numerous areas, Uwadiae stated, “I told him it would not work.” However, he instructed WAEC to go ahead and set up an examination in that manner.
“I informed him that developing and implementing a curriculum takes years in a country’s educational system.”
He gave the example of how Ghana, Sierra Leone, and the Gambia were improved by the 6-3-3-4 educational system, which was unsuccessful in Nigeria.
