FG Says Students Can Choose Any WAEC Subjects Regardless of Stream

WAEC: As confusion over the revised curriculum continues to spark debate throughout the nation, the Federal Government has reiterated that senior secondary school students, whether in arts, commercial, or science classes, are free to register for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in any approved subject of their choice.

The Federal Ministry of Education’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folashade, signed a press release on Saturday that provided clarity in response to widespread false information that was making the rounds on social media and in some schools.

The ministry states that “there is no restriction or exclusion attached to the selection of any approved subject under the Senior Secondary School Curriculum,” refuting assertions that pupils must adhere rigidly to their assigned subject tracks.

The curriculum was purposefully created to be adaptable, student-centered, and supportive of a range of academic and professional goals, according to officials.

Under the direction, science students can choose subjects that are typically classified as social sciences or the arts, just as commercial and arts students can choose science-designated subjects under the supervision of certified counselors, parents, or school administrators.

The ministry also confirmed that the term “digital technology” had replaced “information and communication technology” (ICT), allaying public worries.

The statement emphasized that the change is only in nomenclature and does not affect students who have already taken ICT classes or modify the content of the program.

Six trades have been approved under the curriculum, according to the government.

Only if the topics are provided by their schools and they have received instruction in them may students register for any of these trades. The government emphasized that pupils are not required to register one of the six trade disciplines as a third subject if they have never been exposed to any of them.

For competitive courses like medical, engineering, law, accountancy, and mass communication, Nigerian institutions frequently demand particular subject combinations.

The ministry warned that false information is still a significant problem during exam cycles and asked the public to rely only on confirmed material. It stated that when the senior secondary school system continues to undergo reforms, more updates will be released.
