FG: No Teacher Should Teach Without TRCN
The Federal Ministry of Education has restructured the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria and the National Teachers’ Institute to bolster teacher professionalism and enhance educational delivery across the nation.
In a press release posted on Sunday through its official X account, the ministry outlined the new responsibilities for the two agencies, mandating that all educators must register with the TRCN.
The statement clarified that the NTI will now focus on providing in-service training and community professional development initiatives, while the TRCN will be responsible for regulating and licensing teachers throughout the country.
Education Minister Dr. Maruf Alausa introduced new guidelines for both organizations, addressing critical areas such as teacher registration, professional development, compliance oversight, welfare, and curriculum standards.
He emphasized, “No educator will enter a Nigerian classroom without TRCN registration and licensing. This ensures that every child receives competent and professional instruction.
“This reform centers on achieving results and ensuring sustainability. Nigerian children will be taught by the finest, ready for excellence, and supported by top professionals. It is Renewed Hope in action.”
It should be remembered that Alausa cautioned on Thursday that secondary schools must verify that their teachers have the appropriate certification, or they will lose their eligibility as examination centers.
He indicated that starting in 2027, the accreditation of both public and private secondary schools to conduct public examinations, such as WASSCE, NABTEB, NECO, and NBIAS, will be directly linked to teachers’ TRCN certification.
