FG Deploys 240 Solar Tricycles to UNILAG, ABU, Others

The Federal Government (FG) has launched the ‘Renewed Hope Campus Transport Scheme,’ introducing 240 solar-powered electric tricycles across 12 federal universities to cut student transportation costs by over 70 percent.

The initiative, implemented through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), was officially flagged off at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa. Under the scheme, Student Union Governments (SUGs) at each university will manage the tricycles, operating them at reduced fares while using revenue to cover maintenance and future expansion.

Dr. Alausa said the project was a direct directive from President Bola Tinubu, aimed at providing innovative and sustainable solutions to ease students’ economic challenges. “Mr. President directed that we design solutions that are innovative, sustainable, and responsive to the needs of our young people,” he stated.

The 12 beneficiary universities, representing all six geopolitical zones, include UNILAG, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), University of Benin (UNIBEN), University of Jos (UNIJOS), and Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria. Each institution received 20 tricycles along with a dedicated solar-powered charging station. The Minister emphasized that the tricycles not only reduce student expenses but also promote zero-emission, eco-friendly mobility on campuses.

Looking ahead, Dr. Alausa revealed that the scheme will be expanded in the 2026 TETFund cycle. He also announced plans to provide free Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion kits for 2,000 university staff vehicles and disclosed that UNILAG would soon benefit from an 11 MW solar mini-grid to support its power needs.

UNILAG Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, praised the initiative, highlighting its alignment with the university’s commitment to green and sustainable campus mobility.
