FG Denies Plans to Extend NYSC to Two Years
Claims that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program would be extended to two years have been rejected by the federal government.
Confusion regarding the NYSC program’s future resulted from the claim’s widespread distribution on social media and web reports last week.
During a convocation lecture at Lagos State University (LASU) on Tuesday, Minister of Education Tunji Alausa responded to the claims by stating that he was misquoted.
The minister clarified that his proposal was not a prolongation of the NYSC service year, but rather the establishment of a unique teaching corps for National Colleges of Education graduates.
“Now, I never once advocated for extending youth service to two years. He said, “I never said that.”
The minister explained that the goal of his plan was to alleviate the teacher shortage in rural regions. To deploy instructors to underprivileged areas for two years, he proposed that the NYSC create a voluntary, optional teacher corps.
“There aren’t enough jobs for the large number of National Colleges of Education graduates that we are training. There are difficulties as a result of this mismatch between supply and demand. There is a shortage of teachers in rural areas in topics like science, math, and English, Alausa continued.
The minister also disclosed that the government intends to integrate certified PTA teachers into the federal civil service and is auditing teachers who work for Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) in unification schools.
