2009 Agreement: CONUA to FG — “We Must Be Included in ASUU Renegotiation Talks!”
The Congress of University Academics (CONUA) has stated that it is completely unacceptable that the Federal Government may deny it the opportunity to participate in the renegotiation of the 2009 Agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
During Dr. Chris Ngige’s time as Minister of Labor and Employment, CONUA, a breakaway organization from ASUU, registered as a separate union and has since operated on its own.
The organization expressed this worry in a statement provided to the Nigerian Tribune on Monday by Dr. Niyi Sunmonu, its national president and a professor at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.
He claims that we have been made aware of a letter dated April 4, 2025, that was sent to ASUU and stated that the Renegotiation Committee, which was chaired by Dr. Yayale Ahmed, a former head of service for the federation, had sent its report to the federal government.
According to Sunmonu, this development for CONUA is both unexpected and disheartening, especially considering that the union had previously received a formal letter of invitation from Dr. Olatunji Alausa, the Minister of Education, on December 20, 2024, instructing the same committee to communicate with the union.
However, he pointed out that CONUA has not yet received an invitation to submit anything or participate in the renegotiation process.
