ASUU Urges Nigerians to Press FG on Unmet Demands
The Abuja Zone of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has urged Nigerians to encourage the Federal Government to address all pending matters with the union to prevent another unnecessary industrial action.
During a news conference in Abuja on Monday, the Zonal Coordinator, Prof. Al-Amin Abdullahi, made this appeal.
Mr. Abdullahi was represented by Dr. Sylvanus Ugoh, the ASUU Chairman from the University of Abuja.
The Abuja Zone of ASUU has urged Nigerians to encourage the Federal Government to settle all unresolved issues with the union to avoid another avoidable industrial action.
This appeal was made by the Zonal Coordinator, Prof. Al-Amin Abdullahi, during a news conference held in Abuja on Monday.
Dr. Sylvanus Ugoh, the ASUU Chairman from the University of Abuja, represented Mr. Abdullahi.
“It is evident that, nearly four weeks after the suspension, the Federal Government has not effectively utilized this goodwill period.
“The administration has failed to display the required urgency in tackling the ongoing issues affecting public universities,” he stated.
Mr. Abdullahi emphasized that the government needs to act swiftly to avert another industrial disagreement in Nigerian public universities.
He noted that the consequences of unpaid salary awards, withheld wages, unremitted deductions, and insufficient funding have been devastating as students encounter extended academic calendars, increased financial pressures, and disrupted educational experiences.
He remarked that the national initiative of cultivating capable future leaders, innovators, and professionals is under severe threat.
The zonal coordinator pointed out that a significant area of contention in the Federal Government’s proposal was the inadequacy of salaries and working conditions, which fell short of the members’ expectations.
He acknowledged certain actions taken by the government, such as the release of some third-party deductions and partial payment of promotion arrears dating back to 2017.
He considered these actions an attempt to build confidence rather than a real commitment to address the core issues.
According to him, the most effective way to rejuvenate public universities is through honest negotiations instead of misleading information.
“However, when agreements are violated, payments are withheld, or deception takes the place of genuine dialogue, the union has both a moral and constitutional duty to defend public education and protect its members.
“ASUU is prepared to use every lawful means available if the government continues to disregard the challenges that threaten the viability of public universities,” he stated.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the universities within the Abuja Zone include UniAbuja, Federal University of Technology, Minna, Federal University, Lafia, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, and Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai.
