ASUU Threatens Fresh Strike, Demands Swift Action from FG
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned the federal government to address urgent issues affecting the education sector quickly. If not, it could lead to a nationwide strike.
This warning was given on Tuesday during a discussion in Calabar by the Zonal Coordinator of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Calabar Zone, Comrade Ikechukwu Igwenyi.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities stressed the need to complete renegotiations and fully adhere to all existing agreements with clear timelines. They also called for fair pay and better working conditions for lecturers to prevent the ongoing loss of academic professionals from Nigerian universities.
The union demanded the immediate payment of three and a half months of overdue salaries, all withheld payments, reimbursement of third-party deductions, and resolution of all promotion arrears.
Additionally, the Academic Staff Union of Universities requested the payment of the outstanding wage award, ranging from 25 to 35 percent, including necessary adjustments, proper budget funding for education, and continuous support for the university system.
The union urged the federal government to respect university autonomy and avoid policies that undermine academic freedom.
The signatories include Comrade Happiness Uduak (IPZC, Calabar Zone), Comrade Chidi Mba (Chairperson, ASUU ABSU), Comrade Frank Nnamso Ndarake (Chairperson, ASUU EBSU), Comrade Louis Omeneyi (Chairperson, ASUU FUNAI), Comrade Patrick Ushie (Chairperson, ASUU UNICROSS), Comrade Peter Ubi (Chairperson, ASUU Unical), Comrade Valentine Ntui (Chairperson, ASUU UEE), and Comrade Opeyemi Olajide (Chairperson, ASUU UNIUYO).
“We have given the government a four-week deadline to resolve these issues, warning that we will not hesitate to start industrial action if our demands are not met.
“We will remain determined and strong in this just struggle, confident that victory is within reach,” the Academic Staff Union of Universities declared.
The union reiterated that education is a right, not a privilege. It is the government’s responsibility to ensure proper funding for the education sector.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities also pointed out that the problem is not a lack of funds but a lack of political will to invest in Nigeria’s development.
“We will rebuild the Nigerian university system from the lessons of this struggle,” the Academic Staff Union of Universities concluded.
