ASUU Slams Slow Talks, Warns FG of Another Strike

The Kano Zone of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has expressed its concerns about the sluggish progress of negotiations with the Federal Government.

The union has also warned that the nation might experience another round of industrial action if outstanding issues are not promptly addressed.

During a press conference in Kano on Monday, Zonal Coordinator Dr. Abdulkadir Muhammad shared this information regarding the results of the Union’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting that took place from November 8 to November 9 at Taraba State University.

He mentioned that ASUU felt let down as, weeks after ending its two-week warning strike on October 13, the government had not demonstrated the necessary commitment to resolve longstanding issues affecting the university system.

Muhammad noted that the warning strike was called off on October 21 to allow for constructive dialogue and in response to requests from stakeholders such as the National Assembly, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), parents, students, and the broader community.

“Regrettably, the hope for a comprehensive, amicable, and timely resolution is diminishing,” he stated.

Muhammad further indicated that some government officials were “spreading false narratives” in an attempt to suggest that ASUU’s demands had been mostly satisfied.

He pointed out that while the government had settled some promotion arrears that date back to 2017 and released portions of withheld third-party deductions, the payments had been significantly diminished by inflation and did not lead to improved conditions for academics.

Muhammad called attention to the ongoing neglect of the education sector as concerning, emphasizing that this trend is contributing to the significant brain drain in public universities.

He also criticized the rise of universities without sufficient funding, cautioning that this trend is degrading the quality of higher education across the country.

The zonal coordinator welcomed the Federal Government’s declaration of a seven-year moratorium on the establishment of new federal tertiary institutions and encouraged that this policy be extended to state governments.
