ASUU Condemns FG’s Poor Handling of Education Sector

The administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has not prioritized the education system, which has frustrated the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Prof. Abubakar Sabo, coordinator of the ASUU Sokoto zone, made this statement to reporters yesterday in Sokoto regarding the union’s decision to halt the warning strike that had previously begun.

According to Sabo, the union was disappointed that rather than viewing education as a social necessity for long-term national growth, the federal government was treating it like a commodity.

Sabo stated that the National Executive Council (NEC) had halted the warning strike in exchange for a one-month window for renegotiation, with the understanding that the government would act honestly.

Sabo emphasized, “The government must take advantage of this opportunity to promptly resolve all outstanding matters so students can remain in school.”

However, Sabo emphasized the difficulties in the area, pointing out that Shehu Shagari University of Education, Sokoto, had been operating without a legally established governing body, which resulted in excessive meddling in academic matters.

He bemoaned the Federal University of Agriculture, Zuru, which was founded and started operations without a take-off grant, and the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua University in Katsina, which faced non-payment of salaries at the approved scale and attempted external interference with its portal, in violation of university law.

In order to avoid a recurrence of the crisis in Nigeria’s public universities, Sabo urged the Federal Government to act in good faith and swiftly address any unresolved issues.
