ASUU Awards Over ₦164 Million in Scholarships to 164 Deserving Students Nationwide!

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced the disbursement of the 2024 scholarship to 164 indigent students selected from branches of the union across the country.

This was disclosed by the convener of the ASUU Grant, Research, and Publications Committee, Professor Christopher Piwuna, on Saturday during a press conference at the Sa’adu Zungur University, Yuli Campus, Bauchi State.

Piwuna explained that of the 79 ASUU branches, two successful applicants were selected in every university through a rigorous screening process.

He said each recipient of the scholarship went home with a non-refundable cash prize of N200,000.

Gender balance was evident in the recipients’ selection, according to the convener, who was represented by Lawan Abubakar, the former coordinator of ASUU Bauchi Zone.

He revealed that recipients with physical disabilities were chosen to help them pursue higher education.

About N164,800,000 was spent by ASUU on scholarships for deserving students at colleges around the nation during the previous two years.

The government’s relentless attacks on parents and pupils through “school charges” also influenced its creation.

“We are not requesting repayment from any parent or recipient of our indigent support at a later time, which is why we argued that the NELFUND scholarship should be a grant,” Piwuna stated.

According to information obtained by PUNCH Online, prospective candidates must demonstrate their destitute financial situation and an outstanding cumulative grade point average to the union in order to be eligible for this scholarship.
