ABU Zaria Warns Admission Seekers Against Admission Racketeers

Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has issued a stern warning to prospective students and the general public about admission racketeers, fraudsters who exploit eager admission seekers by promising illegal admission placements in exchange for money.

As the university’s 2024/2025 admission process progresses, ABU is urging applicants to follow only authorized channels to avoid falling prey to scams.

The notice has issued by the management is as follows:

As Ahmadu Bello University is about to commence admissions for the 2024/2025 academic session, it has become necessary to warn prospective students and parents/guardians to be wary of fraudulent persons who parade themselves as admissions facilitators of the University.

The University Management is in receipt of many complaints from the victims of admission frauds in the past reliving their sad experiences. The self-acclaimed admission facilitators extort money from their victims to purportedly secure admissions for them, an act that is totally unacceptable to the institution.

While urging the prospective students to report to the University authorities anybody demanding money to facilitate their admission, the institution also warns that its security personnel are working in tandem with other security agencies to track down these fraudulent acts and to take appropriate action against the perpetrators accordingly.

What are Admission Racketeers?

Admission racketeers are individuals or groups who pose as representatives of a university, promising applicants guaranteed admission slots—usually in exchange for large sums of money or personal information.

These criminals often exploit students’ desperation to secure placement in high-demand courses, such as medicine, engineering, law, or pharmacy.

Racketeers typically operate by:

  • Falsely impersonating university officials.
  • Creating fake admission portals or social media accounts.
  • Promising admission through “special lists” or “VC lists” not recognized by the institution.

ABU’s Official Warning

In a recent statement, ABU Zaria emphasized that the university follows a transparent, merit-based process for admission. The school reiterated that it does not authorize third parties to offer admission placements on its behalf. The university’s Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) portal remains the only valid platform for admission offers and acceptance.

According to the university’s registrar, any individual caught engaging with or promoting admission racketeering schemes will face strict legal action. The university advised parents and guardians to remain vigilant and discourage their children from engaging with fraudulent individuals.

How to Avoid ABU Admission Scams

Here are some practical steps for applicants to stay safe:

  1. Verify Official Information:
Always cross-check admission information through ABU’s official website or JAMB’s Central Admission Processing System (CAPS).
  2. Ignore Suspicious Offers:
Be wary of unsolicited messages or emails promising admission in exchange for money or favors.
  3. Report Fraudulent Activities:
Report suspicious individuals or websites to the university or relevant law enforcement agencies.
  4. Stay Updated via Official Channels:
Follow ABU’s verified social media platforms and website for announcements regarding the admission process.
  5. Don’t Pay for Admission:
Admission into ABU is strictly based on merit. No legitimate official will ask for payment to secure admission.

The Consequences of Falling for Racketeers

Victims of admission rackets often face severe consequences, including:

  1. Loss of money without receiving admission.
  2. Blacklisting by the institution if caught participating in illegal activities.
  3. Emotional and psychological distress caused by the realization of being defrauded.

Additionally, ABU has warned that students found complicit in fraudulent activities may be permanently barred from future admission into the university.

Conclusion

Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, remains committed to providing fair and transparent admission processes for all applicants.

The institution’s warning against admission racketeers serves as a reminder to students and parents to stay cautious during this critical period.

By following the official admission procedures and avoiding shortcuts, applicants can ensure a smoother, fraud-free admission journey.

ABU encourages everyone to report suspicious activities promptly and hopes to welcome new students who have gained admission through legitimate means.
