The Vice-Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, Prof. Olugbenga Ige, has announced that 1,116 students from the university have benefited from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).
Ige shared this information during a conversation with journalists in Akungba-Akoko, stating that the institution had received a total of N144,530,000 from NELFUND.
He clarified that these funds would be used to cover tuition and other mandatory fees for eligible students at the university.
The vice-chancellor expressed gratitude to NELFUND for its assistance to students through the loan program, highlighting that the interest-free loans have alleviated financial burdens for students.
He remarked, “The University is reaping the benefits of NELFUND. It commenced last year, and to date, over 1,116 students have benefited from loans totaling N144,530,000.
“That is the total amount that has been allocated to AAUA so far for NELFUND.”
In discussing his five-year tenure, Ige mentioned that the university has achieved remarkable progress and has maintained its status as a leading institution for research and education.
He added that the university has seen commendable advancements across various areas, particularly in terms of research, expansion of academics, welfare for staff and students, sports, skills development, and partnerships for increased global recognition.
“When I took office on July 7, 2021, I did so with great hope and a clear vision to transform Adekunle Ajasin University into a model of excellence.
“Those objectives were not just empty statements; they became a foundation for our actions.
“Today, I am thankful to God and proud to announce that we have achieved significant progress together.
“The university has not only upheld its reputation as one of Nigeria’s top state universities but has also made strides in research, digital education, staff enhancement, and community service,” he stated.
The vice-chancellor acknowledged that these achievements would not have been possible without the support of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and also thanked the staff, students, and unions for their collaboration.
Regarding academic integrity, Ige mentioned that his administration revised structures to fortify academic programs, resulting in the full accreditation of all programs and the creation of new faculties and departments.
“We have significantly expanded our academic offerings by increasing the number of faculties from seven to ten.
“We launched three new faculties: Administration and Management Sciences, Allied Health Sciences, and Computing, along with new Departments of French, Food Science, and Library and Information Science.
“We have finalized the construction of buildings for the Faculty of Science and the new Faculty of Social Sciences.
“In addition, we have successfully renovated the 30-Classroom Quadrangle, Intercontinental Hall, and the Faculty of Education buildings.
“Our Business School in Akure has also been upgraded and fitted with modern facilities,” he noted.
He committed to maintaining this momentum, enhancing student welfare through scholarships and work-study programs, and continuing to prioritize sports development.
