Meet Aisha Girei: Gombe’s Top JAMB Scorer Reveals Her Secrets to UTME Success!
16-year-old Aisha Ahmed Girei attends Pen Resource Academy, Gombe. According to the results of this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), which were just made public by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), she is arguably Gombe State’s highest scorer. The SS3 student discussed her future aspirations and the key to her success in spite of the widespread exam failures across the country in this interview.
Give us a brief introduction.
Aisha Ahmed Girei is my name. I’m 16 years old, a native of Adamawa State, and a student at Pen Resource Academy, Gombe. I currently reside in Gombe. I completed my elementary, high, and nursery education at Pen Resource Academy, Gombe.
Your UTME score was 333. Despite this year’s enormous failure, how did you manage to accomplish this?
As soon as we started SS3 in September 2024, the school began preparing us for the JAMB exam. I didn’t take it seriously at first, as I believed the test was still a long way off. I started to take things seriously this year in January or February after realizing how near the UTME was. I then sat up and focused on my studies. I made a schedule and established a study habit for both school and home.
Despite not starting early, I made good use of the limited time I had, and I believe that’s what made the difference.
Did you have a goal in mind that you wanted to accomplish?
Since the course I want to take is so competitive, I had a very high goal, even though I didn’t specifically try to achieve 333 points. Additionally, the cut-off score for Gombe State University, where I applied, was 200, so in order to have a shot, I wanted to earn at least 300 or 320 points.
Did your father encourage you to pursue a career in medicine?
Actually, no. Despite being a doctor, my father did not encourage me to pursue a career in medicine or surgery. I was simply motivated by the way he uses his career to assist others. And ever since I was a young child, I have been interested in helping people by becoming a doctor.
What other course do you believe you can study outside of medicine?
Another field that interests me and one I think I can excel in is software engineering, which I can study.
What kind of reading habits do you have?
The SS3 pupils at my school arrive at school by 7 a.m. and leave by 5:30 p.m. I spend around two hours studying when I get home, and I go to bed by ten o’clock. I study until dawn after waking up at two or three in the morning. I also study whenever I have free time and in any setting that I know I can understand. In other words, I study all day and all night. However, I read most of the time between three and seven in the morning.
Are you implying that you avoided all social activities, such as using smartphones and watching television?
Yes, I completely stopped using social media and drastically reduced the amount of time I spent watching television and other media that might divert my attention from my studies.
How did your parents contribute to your accomplishments?
My greatest source of inspiration comes from my parents, particularly my dad, who never fails to provide me with advice, support, and the belief that I can succeed. In addition, my mother supports me by guiding me and making sure I consistently do my coursework.
In what ways do you think your efforts have been successful?
Thank God! I’m thankful that all of my sacrifices, hard work, and efforts to isolate myself from social life and enjoyment weren’t in vain. That all of my hard work in studying has finally paid off makes me very delighted.
Were you an average student, or were you consistently at the top of your class?
I used to be the best student in the class, but I wasn’t always at the top. That being said, I never let that fool me. I’ve always aimed for more achievement and sought to build on my past accomplishments. For me, the most important things were reading comprehension and consistency.
How do you spend your leisure time?
I prefer to spend time with my family because it helps me unwind, especially after reading a lot. I also like to watch educational videos because they help me learn new things. Sometimes I simply want to lie down quietly to rest, since it allows me to refuel.
What guidance would you offer other pupils?
I encourage my other classmates to have confidence in themselves. They ought to maintain their concentration and begin studying for the test as soon as possible. When they don’t grasp what they’ve been taught or are being taught, they should make good use of their time and ask questions. Above all, people ought to rely on Allah and offer up their prayers. Additionally, they should read consistently because even a little effort each day adds up.
