Fake News! 2025 WASSCE English Exam Not Cancelled — WAEC Clears the Air

Claims that the English language exam for the current West African Senior School Certificate Examination for School Candidates, 2025, has been canceled have been refuted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria.

A widely shared news statement on social media on Friday, May 30, 2025, incorrectly said that the English Language test scheduled for May 28 had been canceled and that a new date would be announced.

However, WAEC characterized the publication as fraudulent and the product of “mischief-makers” in a statement released on Tuesday.

The West African Examinations Council’s management would like to clarify that the press statement that is circulating was not issued by the council.

According to the statement, which was signed by Moyosola Adesina, the acting head of public affairs, “the said examination has not been cancelled.”

WAEC emphasized that it only communicates with the public through verified methods, even though the origin of the fraudulent paper is still unknown.

In order to confuse and frighten the candidates who took the test, the message further stated, “The council is certain that the false claim is being peddled by mischief-makers who are bent on bringing the council to disrepute.”

Additionally, WAEC asked the public—including candidates, parents, and schools—to ignore such unconfirmed material and only trust official correspondence.

All of the council’s material is shared through accredited media outlets nationwide as well as our official, verified social media accounts.

“Similarly, the council’s public affairs department issues and signs all press releases on behalf of the head of the national office,” the statement said.

The council assured stakeholders that it is still dedicated to enhancing service delivery to Nigerian students and thanked the public for their continuous faith throughout the previous 73 years.

However, the examination authority attributed the delay in the paper’s conduct to increased efforts to prevent exam misconduct, specifically question paper leaks.

According to an exclusive source obtained by Sunday PUNCH, there may be a connection between the leak and certain exam officials, specifically the distribution of the English language paper to the public four days before the test.
