Mass Failure in JAMB Shows Exam Is Now Cheat-Proof — Says Education Minister
The Joint Examination Matriculation Board (JAMB) mass failure rate, according to Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa, is proof of how well the measures against exam misconduct are working.
He claimed that people who engage in various forms of exam cheating deter many committed students, so weakening the value of studying for real knowledge.
“It is a reflection of exams being done the proper way,” he stated in response to questioning from the Channels Television team during its morning show.
“JAMB uses computer-based testing to administer its exams. The level of security they have implemented has completely eradicated fraud and cheating. Our other tests, such as WAEC and NECO, no longer have the same format.
“WAEC and NECO will switch to computer-based testing for their exams starting in November of this year. To combat this scam, we must use technology. Numerical centers, which are government centers, are unacceptable.
However, what you are witnessing at the moment is that individuals cheat on the WAEC and NECO secondary school exams before moving on to JAMB, where cheating is prohibited. And that is how what we are witnessing today is reflected. It’s not good.
Therefore, you will turn the excellent ones into terrible ones. And we must totally cease doing that. Exam practice is not tolerated in our nation.
He said that the technology would be completely implemented as part of steps to protect other qualifying and transitional exams in the nation.
He stated that all tests, including WAEC, NECO, EMBRAS, and NBTEB, will be all computer-based tests (CBT) by 2027.
According to Alausa, Nigerian children are born with the potential to excel, but their surroundings have caused them to take shortcuts, which has made learning difficult.
Additionally, the fact that cheating deters diligent pupils is more significant. I realize that some of my other colleagues have already posed the question, and if I were a student right now, I would be waiting for a test for WAEC or NECO. Do you think I’ll read? No, I’ll go with them!
“The JAMB exam is now nearly entirely thought-free. We are in this predicament because of the widespread cheating in NECO and WAEC. Even kids who wish to act morally become completely unmotivated when these questions are allowed to slip.
And many of our young people are highly productive and vivacious, but they are predisposed to succeed. However, we are committed to halting the environment in which they find themselves.
And we’ve come a long way in putting an end to this. And because we are preparing our youth to be productive members of the nation and the global community, we will be quite aggressive about this. We cannot afford for our educational system to remain so widespread. We are attacking this from the front for that reason.
