JAMB Apologizes to Hijabi Candidates Over Caleb University Harassment Incident
During the ongoing 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), security guards at the Caleb University CBT Centre in Imota, Lagos, reportedly prohibited female candidates from wearing the hijab. This has been vehemently denounced by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
The report claims that security guards at the Christian-owned university forced some Muslim female applicants to take off their headscarves before they could take the test.
The development has subsequently provoked significant indignation across the country, notably among important Islamic organizations such as the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), the Hijab Rights Advocacy Initiative (HRAI), and the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN), Lagos State Area Unit.
These organizations have called on JAMB to charge the implicated officials and bar the center from administering exams in the future.
Dr. Fabian Benjamin, JAMB’s Public Communication Advisor, responded quickly to the news by denouncing the security officials’ actions and calling them “unilateral” and “unauthorized.”
Benjamin said, “The examination body has been made aware of the unlawful limitations placed on candidates wearing hijabs in its Caleb University Center, and prompt action has been taken to address this unilateral decision, which has been categorically condemned by the university’s vice-chancellor.”
He clarified that the regrettable event was caused by the conduct of a single security guard.
He said that an aggressive security guard was responsible for this foolish move.
In addition, JAMB formally apologized to the impacted applicants and promised that no one would be excluded from taking the test.
“We sincerely apologize to the impacted candidates and commend the university and center leadership for their swift action, which ensured that no candidate was unfairly disadvantaged,” the statement continued.
The board restated its commitment to respecting the rights of all applicants and ensuring religious freedom throughout its examinations, while committing to implement measures to prevent similar events in the future
