Lagos Government Pays ₦1.5 Billion WAEC Fees for 58,188 Students — Education Gets a Boost!
Between 2024 and 2025, the Lagos State Government paid N1.5 billion for the fees of 58,188 legitimate students to take the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
The clue was given by Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, the Commissioner for Basic Primary and Secondary School Education, who also declared that 17 new schools would be opened in the next year.
He gave a speech yesterday during the 2025 ministerial briefing held at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa, Ikeja, while presenting the ministry’s scorecard for the previous year.
According to the commissioner, there were five senior secondary schools, ten junior secondary schools, and two primary schools among the new establishments.
Additionally, the commissioner reported that 17,575 students were successfully transferred to the state’s Junior Secondary School II (JSII) and Senior Secondary School I (SSI) from public and private institutions.
He said that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s pledge to relieve parents of the financial strain of paying exam fees through the free education scheme included the payment of WAEC fees.
He stated, “Because education is a lifelong journey, I urge and encourage students, more importantly, students in our boarding schools, to take full advantage of this initiative.”
For the 2025 payment, he stated that a biometric capture and image registration exercise was carried out for 56,134 Senior Secondary III students in order to precisely ascertain the number of students eligible for sponsorship by the Lagos State Government for the 2025 WASSCE. This was done in order to prevent waste and guarantee accountability in the sponsorship process.
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) administration has been given a seven-day ultimatum by the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) to meet its four demands pertaining to the welfare of workers and the alleged victimization of labor leaders.
Prince Peters Adeyemi, the general secretary of NASU, threatened to shut down all WAEC offices nationwide beginning Monday, March 24, if their demands were not met during a press conference in Lagos on Monday.
“All WAEC offices nationwide will be permanently closed if the management does not act immediately,” Adeyemi said.
