WASSCE Preview For 2025: Commissioner Warns Stakeholders
In anticipation of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), Lagos State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, has sent out a severe warning to all parties involved in the state.
Despite the significant financial investments made in the education sector by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s WASSCE administration, the commissioner voiced dissatisfaction with absenteeism, negligence, and other misconduct displayed by stakeholders.
He emphasized how these problems have a detrimental effect on pupils’ academic achievement, especially when it comes to external exams.
The WASSCE commissioner underlined that principals and vice principals must follow rules and make sure they teach for six and eight periods each week, respectively, during a recent meeting with senior government officials in the education sector, which was conducted in Education Districts V and VI.
He also advocated for a change in thinking on leadership and the maintenance of discipline in schools.
In addition to demanding open reporting of incidents, including truancy, assaults, absenteeism, and inappropriate behavior by teachers, the commissioner asked the Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA) to fulfill its duties with assertiveness.
He emphasized that such misbehavior cannot be disregarded.
He reaffirmed that any educator found guilty of immoral behavior or exam impersonation will be subject to disciplinary action by public service regulations.
He declared, “Anyone caught engaging in any form of examination malpractice or sacrificing excellent performance for mediocrity will face the full consequences of the law.”
In order to improve their capacity to influence pupils in a meaningful way, he urged educators to seek out personal training.
In order to encourage pupils to perform academically, he also argued for the revival of extracurricular groups like the Red Cross, the Boys’ Scouts, the Girls’ Guides, and the Literacy and Debating Society.
A significant step in strengthening stakeholders’ commitment to attaining better exam results for students is the next meeting with secondary school principals, which is planned to take place in each of the state’s six education districts.
To find the top candidates for WASSCE, this seminar will highlight the significance of rigorous promotional exams, which guarantee that only worthy students advance to higher classes based entirely on their academic performance.
Additionally, subject associations will work on enhancement initiatives.
