ASUP Suspends two-week strike
On December 2, 2024, the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) announced a two-week definitive strike.
The government’s failure to complete nine essential tasks in the collaboratively created work plan to settle long-standing trade disputes prompted this move.
The goal of the strike was to serve as a warning and a prelude to an ongoing work stoppage.
On December 9, 2024, the Federal Ministry of Labor and Employment convened a conciliation meeting.
To resolve the problems and avoid an indefinite strike, representatives from the government and the union attended the conference.
During the meeting, a new memorandum of agreement detailing the steps to settle the dispute was signed.
To evaluate progress and go over any outstanding issues, a review meeting was planned for January 23, 2025.
Following the review meeting, the ASUP union’s National Executive Council will meet to discuss the results and determine the next course of action.
On Monday, December 16, 2024, ASUP union members are expected to report back to work.
The union expressed gratitude to its members for their enthusiastic participation in the walkout.
To prevent more industrial action, the union also urged the government to uphold the agreements.
