UK tuition fees may increase by 2.7 percent from September 2025

Depending on the inflation numbers used by the ruling Labour Party, tuition fees in the United Kingdom (UK) could rise by 2.7% starting in September 2025.

A-level students who are currently applying to universities in the UK would be impacted by this move.

The increase, which would see tuition fees rise in line with the Retail Price Index inflation, is scheduled to be announced by UK Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson.

In a similar spirit, Universities UK (UUK) CEO Vivienne Stern had stated that the government needed to intervene to “stabilize the ship,” calling for fees to rise under inflation starting in 2025–2026 as a “necessary” measure.

“Just get on and index-link the fee—this cannot go on,” she added. “You can’t continue like this, you know. That’s the very minimum.”

The Russell Group of prestigious institutions has claimed that they are currently losing almost £4,000 per UK student as a result of the tuition fee cap, which has kept rates at £9,250 since 2017.

The industry has been heavily supported by international students, who often pay three or even four times as much as domestic students.

As a result, the abrupt decline in their numbers has cut off universities’ vital lifeline and increased calls for the incoming administration to act immediately.

A sharp decline in wealthy foreign students after a Tory crackdown on dependent visas has also hurt university funding.

According to earlier rumors, for the next five years, the government would increase tuition costs to £10,500.

It is acknowledged, nevertheless, that officials are considering a comprehensive overhaul of the current system and do not wish to commit to any improvements past the upcoming academic year.

The action comes in response to mounting worries that a financial crisis is currently plaguing many institutions, with 40% of English universities anticipating a deficit this year.

In 2012, tuition prices were increased to £9,000 by the coalition government.

Despite the recent spike in inflation, fees have remained unchanged since then, rising to £9,250 in 2017.

According to UUK’s proposals, funding per student would currently be between £12,000 and £13,000 if university teaching investments had kept up with inflation.
