Train your ear before your pen
Yoruba meaning depends heavily on tone. Read aloud with a competent speaker or teacher, mark tone accurately and practise minimal contrasts. Link sound, spelling and meaning in vocabulary cards. Do not treat diacritics as decoration.
Write in the required form
Plan compositions before writing. A narrative needs sequence and character; a description needs sensory order; an argument needs a position and reasons; a letter needs format and register. Edit spelling, tone marks, agreement, punctuation and paragraphing.
Study literature with evidence
Read the prescribed texts named in the official PDF rather than relying on summaries. Build a character and theme map, collect short evidence, identify style and explain social lessons. For oral literature, record performer, audience, occasion, rhythm, language and purpose. Distinguish forms such as proverb, riddle, praise poem, folktale, song and drama.
Learn culture as a system
Use tables for family, kingship, festivals, occupations, religion, material objects and social values. For each item, learn its meaning, procedure, participants, function and modern influence. Compare traditional and contemporary practices without assuming one experience represents all Yoruba communities.
