2. Structure and Use of Written French	Form classes: nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, articles and contractions. Vocabulary: contemporary meaning/use, synonyms, antonyms and faux amis. Word order: affirmative, interrogative, imperative and passive sentences. Read French every day

Use short news, stories and examination passages. Read once for the central idea, again for structure and a third time for details. Mark pronoun references, connectors and tense changes. Build topic vocabulary in phrases rather than isolated words.

Make grammar functional

Conjugate verbs inside sentences and timelines. Rotate through present, past and future contexts, then practise pronouns, agreement, negation and question forms. Keep a correction notebook for gender, accents, prepositions and past-participle agreement.

Handle vocabulary and faux amis carefully

Record a word with article, plural, common collocation, opposite and example. Separate true cognates from faux amis. Learn idioms and proverbs as complete units and identify the situation in which each speech act is appropriate.

Train your ear

Listen to short standard French recordings and repeat by sense group. Practise minimal pairs, liaison and silent final letters. Read aloud and record yourself; compare rhythm and vowel quality, not just individual consonants.

Study culture through comparison

Create tables for Francophone West Africa, France and Nigeria covering school, family, government, work, food, festivals and leisure. Avoid stereotypes: learn specific practices and institutions and explain similarities or differences.
