WAEC Shifts CBT-WASSCE to 2027 After Legislative Directive

In response to a mandate from the National House of Representatives to change the conduct, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has delayed the start of its computer-based testing (CBT) edition of the WASSCE until 2027.

Recall that WAEC had said that starting with the 2026 WASSCE, the CBT examination system would be fully used.

The council did, however, declare on Thursday that the pilot test of the computer-based school examination 2026 will be conducted next year instead of a complete CB-WASSCE in 2026.

The WAEC Nigeria National Committee (NNC) chairman, Binta Abdulkadir, revealed that the council will start holding CB-WASSCE in 2027.
WAEC was previously instructed by the House of Representatives to stop administering the CB-WASSCE and begin administering the computer exam in 2030.
According to Abdulkadir, the council’s efforts to modernize assessment in order to better serve Nigerian children have reached a major turning point this year.
“Beginning with the private candidates’ examination (first series, 2024), this technological advancement builds upon the success of the CB-WASSCE established last year. Candidates answered the multiple-choice questions directly on the computer screen during this first rollout, which used a hybrid method.

“I would want to use this opportunity to reassure you that no candidate taking this exam will be denied the right to vote. The council is working with the Federal Ministry of Education to investigate measures that will guarantee a seamless transition to the CB-WASSCE, she said.

She also revealed that senior secondary school pupils had just received training from the council on the pilot test of using tablets and digital styluses to answer essay problems.

According to the Federal Government’s order, this is to make sure they are ready for the transition to the full-fledged CB-WASSCE.
Additionally, during its yearly ceremony in Abia State, WAEC presented awards to exceptional pupils.

In the meantime, Amos Dangut, WAEC’s head of national office (HNO), stated in his speech at the 2025 event that the Nigeria National Committee (NNC) is the organization’s top policy-making body in Nigeria and that its members are distinguished and seasoned Nigerians.

Dangut emphasized that the committee makes sure WAEC’s operations run smoothly throughout the nation and that the council’s policies in Nigeria are developed and carried out in the best interests of the general public.

He reaffirmed that WAEC will carry out its duty as Africa’s premier examining body, contributing to its stakeholders’ educational objectives.

WAEC honored a few May/June 2024 WASSCE students for their exceptional achievement at the NNC meeting.

With eight A1s, Ajisafe Olamilekan, an 18-year-old student at Eemaan Foundation College in Osogbo, Osun State, took first place overall in the WASSCE.

Onovo Joan, an 18-year-old student of Louisville Girls High School in Ijebu-Itele, Ogun State, placed first runner-up with eight A1s.

Mbah Mac-Donald, an 18-year-old student at Grundtvig International Secondary School in Oba, Anambra State, placed second runner-up with eight A1s.
Certificates, plaques, and monetary awards were given to the recipients.

The Federal Ministry of Education’s directions regarding the complete switch to CB-WASSCE for the 2026 exam, which have alarmed stakeholders, are known to the council, according to the NNC chairman.
