Group Faults WAEC’s 2026 Subject Reinstatement, Seeks Old Curriculum

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has come under fire from the Education Rights Campaign (ERC) for what it called a “piecemeal” restoration of topics for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Only a complete return to the previous curriculum, according to the ERC, would shield pupils from being forced to take subjects they had not studied.

The group claimed that WAEC’s most recent circular to schools, dated December 10, 2025, had failed to address the fundamental concerns brought up by parents, teachers, and students in a statement released on Thursday, December 11, 2025, and signed by Olanrewaju Akinola, representative of Concerned Parents, and Adaramoye Michael Lenin, ERC National Mobilization Officer.

The group said, “For example, a business student studying storekeeping and insurance cannot register for those subjects because they are unavailable in WAEC’s portal, and arts and science students encounter the same obstacle with different trade subjects, such as Dyeing and Bleaching and Data Processing.”

Additionally, the ERC noted “glaring inconsistencies” in WAEC’s correspondence with schools.

It referenced a letter from WAEC dated November 21, 2025, stating that due to the lack of a curriculum and syllabus, Digital Technologies will not be studied until 2028.

It said that this was in direct opposition to the December 10 letter that equated digital technologies with computer studies.

According to the statement, “such contradictions erode confidence in our education system.”

The organization described the present approach as a “ego-driven stop-gap measure” and claimed that the contradictions indicated WAEC was hesitant to completely return to the previous curriculum for the 2026 exam.

In order to guarantee fairness to existing SSS 3 students, the ERC insisted that the 2026 WASSCE be based only on the entirety of the courses covered under the previous curriculum.

ERC stated, “We therefore demand that the 2026 WASSCE be based on the entire set of subjects from the old curriculum, as this is the only way to ensure that no current SSS 3 student is forced to sit for a subject they have not studied since SSS 1.”

The organization warned that thousands of final-year students may suffer from a “unjust, irrational decision” if the National Assembly and the public did not continue to put pressure on the Ministry of Education and WAEC.
