JAMB Makes Admission Status Declaration Mandatory for 2026
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has introduced a new policy mandating all candidates registering for the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) to openly declare their current admission status, including whether they are already students of any tertiary institution.
According to the Board, the new requirement is part of a broader strategy to tackle impersonation and exam malpractice. Findings from JAMB’s 2025 UTME Infraction Report revealed that over 90% of those caught in misconduct were already enrolled in higher institutions, yet returned to the system to manipulate admissions.
JAMB reiterated that the UTME is designed strictly for fresh admission seekers. The Board warned that any candidate who hides or falsifies their true admission status will face serious consequences. These sanctions include the withdrawal of any previous admission, cancellation of the candidate’s new UTME registration, and potential prosecution in line with existing laws.
The Board emphasised that the policy is aimed at restoring integrity to the admission process and ensuring that legitimate candidates are protected from fraud and impersonation.
