FG Offers ASUU 40% Pay Rise to Avert Academic Crisis

In what seems to be a significant step toward preventing another statewide closure of public colleges, the Federal Government has suggested a 40% wage raise for members of the Academic Staff Union of colleges (ASUU).

In what seems to be a significant step toward preventing another statewide closure of public colleges, the federal government has suggested a 40% wage raise for members of the Academic Staff Union of Colleges (ASUU).

During a meeting in Abuja, government negotiators reportedly made the offer to the National Executive Council (NEC) of ASUU. It was one of the biggest pay proposals to university professors in recent memory.

The plan is a part of the government’s increased efforts to resolve persistent issues, such as welfare concerns, financing shortfalls in public universities, and the implementation of prior accords, that have strained relations with the union.

Before the union’s negotiation team meets with the government again for official bargaining sessions, ASUU’s NEC is anticipated to assess the offer internally.

According to union leaders, the evaluation will ascertain whether the proposal satisfies the needs of its members, who have long expressed dissatisfaction with inadequate compensation and worsening circumstances in public colleges.

The development coincides with increased worries among stakeholders, parents, and students about the possibility of more interruptions to the academic schedule in the event that negotiations are unsuccessful.

Although ASUU leaders have not taken a formal stance on the planned 40% hike, they have stated that all proposals will be thoroughly reviewed in compliance with the union’s decision-making procedure.
