WAEC Denies Role in FSTC Yaba Students’ Course Restriction

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has distanced itself from claims regarding the limitation of students at the Federal Science and Technical College (FSTC), Yaba, to a single course for the upcoming 2025/2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The examination body clarified that it is not involved in the school’s internal policies concerning course placements and urged the public to dismiss any allegations linking it to this situation.

In a statement released by Moyosola Adeshina, Acting Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, Yaba-Lagos, on Tuesday, October 28, it asserted that it is not accountable for such policies.

“WAEC wants to explicitly separate itself from this baseless assumption and the circulating information regarding the matter. The council confirms that it has not issued any directives or restricted students’ choices in any specific subjects for WASSCE (SC) 2026 as claimed.

“We wish to remind all stakeholders and the general public that the responsibility for the development and regulation of curricula in Nigeria lies with the Federal Government of Nigeria. WAEC, as an examination body, only acts to execute government policies through assessments,” the statement partially read.

The statement highlighted that as a law-abiding entity, WAEC functions strictly within the set legal and operational frameworks established by its host country.

“The introduction or alteration of any curriculum in Nigeria is the responsibility of the Federal Government. We stress that curriculum changes are not enacted arbitrarily by the Council, but are conducted in accordance with the due process mandated by the federal government.

“Schools, stakeholders, and the general public are advised to ignore the misleading reports and depend exclusively on official communications from the council for reliable information regarding examination protocols for WASSCE (SC) 2026,” the council stated.

WAEC also reassured its stakeholders that the council remains committed to professionalism and excellence in serving the Nigerian child.

“The council ensures that all candidates participating in the WASSCE for School Candidates, 2026 will be given a fair chance for assessment, guaranteeing that no candidate is marginalized,” WAEC noted.
