ASUU Suspends Two-Week Nationwide Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared the end of its two-week warning strike.
ASUU President, Prof. Christopher Piwuna, made this announcement during a press conference on Wednesday in Abuja.

He confirmed that serious negotiations with the Federal Government’s negotiation team have begun, while granting the government a month to finalize discussions on the issues that sparked the industrial action.

The President mentioned that the choice to pause the strike came after an urgent meeting of the union’s National Executive Council (NEC), which took place from October 21 to 22, 2025.

He stated that although the goals of the warning strike were not completely met, meaningful progress had been achieved through renewed discussions with government officials.

“Overall, the emergency NEC meeting determined that the warning strike is to be suspended effective from midnight, Wednesday, the 22nd of October 2025.

“If the government fails to address the issues within the one-month timeframe, the union reserves the right to reinstate the strike without additional notice.”

“ASUU calls on patriotic Nigerians and educational stakeholders to urge the government to expeditiously finalize the renegotiation of the 2009 Agreement along with other unresolved matters,” he expressed.

ASUU reported that it engaged in meetings with the Federal Government team led by Yayale Ahmed on October 16 and 18, 2025, to assess the government’s feedback on the draft renegotiated 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement, adding that a subsequent meeting has already been arranged for further talks.

The union also recognized the involvement of the Senate Committees on Tertiary Education and TETFund, in addition to Labour, and the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, commended their efforts as “promising in amicably settling all unresolved issues”.

“Our members have great expectations based on the strong assurances given by these esteemed senators. We are eager to collaborate with them to ensure they fufulfillheir commitments,” Piwuna remarked.

In expressing gratitude to Nigerians for their support, the President highlighted that the choice to suspend the strike was made out of consideration for students, parents, the media, and other stakeholders who have backed the union’s cause.
