UNIBEN Bans Students’ Sign-Out Celebrations on Campus
The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has banned all forms of celebrations marking the sign-out of graduating students.
This prohibition is detailed in a memo issued by the Registrar of the university, Mr Ademola Bobola, on Tuesday in Benin.
The memo, directed at the university community, cautioned that those who disobey this order could face severe disciplinary measures, including rustication, expulsion, or the rescinding of their certificate.
Bobola mentioned that this decision was made during a meeting on Monday, which reaffirmed a previous resolution by the university’s Senate to prohibit such activities on campus.
The management announced that “no sign-out celebration of any kind, such as signing on T-shirts or playing music, will be allowed,” he stated.
He added that the university would not tolerate any disorderly behaviour or unauthorised gatherings during or following examinations.
“The unrestricted driving around the campuses in any type of vehicle will not be accepted,” warned the circular.
He indicated that unauthorised vehicles would be barred from entering the campuses during the final week of the second semester exam period.
The management has also forbidden large assemblies around faculties, schools, or institutes after exams.
“Photographers will not be allowed to set up photo stands or galleries for such celebrations,” he stated.
He advised parents and guardians of final-year students to refrain from visiting campus grounds during the concluding days of exams.
“Parents and guardians of final-year students are urged to keep away from the Faculty, School, or Institute premises, particularly on the last examination day,” he stated.
Bobola stressed that the university’s position aims to uphold order, discipline, and academic professionalism on campus.
“Members of the university community are encouraged to take note of this directive for strict adherence.
“Any infringement will result in serious disciplinary actions, including certificate withdrawal, rustication, and expulsion of those involved,” he cautioned.
