NUC Approves 34 Courses for New Ekiti State Varsity
The National Universities Commission (NUC) has provided full accreditation for 34 academic programs across four faculties at the recently established Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences in Iyin Ekiti.
FUTES Registrar, Mr. Oluwole Dada, announced this in a statement issued in Iyin Ekiti on Thursday, noting that the accreditation has allowed for the official start of academic activities for the 2025/2026 Academic session at the institution.
The Registrar mentioned that this followed a week-long assessment involving four NUC teams that evaluated the university’s laboratories, classrooms, lecture halls, offices, hostels, library, clinic, toilets, staff transport, and teaching tools, including Hitachi boards.
He expressed, “The assessment was conducted to determine the institution’s readiness and its capability to provide world-class education in science, engineering and technology, computing and information technology, as well as environmental sciences.”
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Gbenga Aribisala, expressed his pleasure at the successful verification, calling it “a significant achievement that confirms the university’s preparedness to deliver contemporary education.”
Aribisala urged those seeking admission to update their preferred institution to FUTES on the JAMB portal, promising that admission would be strictly merit-based.
“Our goal is academic excellence, and we aim to establish this standard right from the beginning. Students who excelled in JAMB, WAEC, NECO, or NABTEB will be granted admission solely based on merit, without bias,” he stated.
The VC warned parents and guardians against using admission agents, emphasizing, “We want to make it clear to the public that the university does not have any agents for admissions or payments of any kind. Our website is accessible to everyone for accurate information.”
He encouraged prospective students to depend only on authentic details available on the institution’s official website, www.futes.edu.ng, or to reach out to the Registrar’s office for assistance.
According to the registrar, the National Universities Commission (NUC) has accredited several programs within the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, including Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Mechatronics Engineering.
He identified the accredited programs for the Faculty of Science as Biochemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Forensic Science, Geology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Physics, Statistics, Animal and Environmental Biology, Biotechnology, Science Laboratory Technology, and Environmental Management and Toxicology.
Dada indicated that the accredited programs for the Faculty of Environmental Sciences consist of Architecture, Building Technology, Estate Management and Valuation, Environmental Management, Industrial Design, Quantity Surveying, Surveying and Geoinformatics, and Urban and Regional Planning.
He enumerated the accredited programs for the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology as Software Engineering, Computer Science, Cyber Security, Data Science, and Information Communication and Technology.
It is worth noting that President Bola Tinubu signed two separate bills on February 20, 2025, establishing FUTES in Iyin Ekiti and the Federal University of Agriculture and Development Studies in Iragbiji, Osun State.
Tinubu, as reported by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, remarked that “the specialized institutions will cater to the educational needs of the population while promoting research and innovation and contributing to the nation’s overall economic development.”
He added, “These institutions will act as training platforms for cultivating professionals in agriculture, science, and technology, thereby enhancing Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global market.”
In March, the President appointed Senator Binta Garba as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairperson of the Governing Council of the university.
Onanuga characterized Garba as “an experienced politician, businesswoman, and administrator who represented the Adamawa North Senatorial District in the Senate from 2015 to 2019 and consecutively served in the House of Representatives from 1999 to 2011.”
