NANS Demands WAEC Boss Removal, Plans Protest

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) National Secretariat has expressed a lack of confidence in the Head of National Office of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Dr. Amos Dangut, and has demanded the immediate dismissal of the examination body’s management. This resolution was made during the recently concluded 87th NANS National Senate Sitting/Congress held at Yobe State University in Damaturu, Yobe State.

The decision follows a series of failures within the council during his tenure, particularly highlighted by the mass failure evident in the recently announced 2025 WAEC English Language results, which many students took under dubious conditions, as the exam was held late into the night. Several allegations, including gross mismanagement, serialization problems, and malpractice facilitated by certain management staff, have prompted this call for protest. NANS leadership had previously requested a retake of the English Language examination to ensure fairness and credibility.

However, WAEC’s refusal to comply with this request and its persistent stance on the issue have only heightened the concerns of students across Nigeria. After the National Senate meeting, Comrade Oladimeji Uthman, Director of Administration and Planning at NANS National Headquarters, stated that the mass failure would not be accepted by NANS, asserting that the association views the situation as a deliberate attempt to undermine the futures of Nigerian students.

How WAEC released varying percentages of results within a 48-hour window of the official results is completely unjustified and an example of significant misconduct by WAEC as an institution. “Given these irregularities and WAEC’s insensitivity, we are initiating a nationwide protest to advocate for the removal of the WAEC head via the Federal Ministry of Education.

Nigerian students are entitled to transparency, fairness, and a trustworthy evaluation of their academic achievements,” Uthman stated. The student body reaffirmed its dedication to safeguarding the interests of Nigerian students and cautioned that it would persist until appropriate actions are taken.
