WAEC Denies Viral List of 151 Withheld 2025 Results

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has distanced itself from a widely circulated list of 151 secondary schools whose candidates’ results for the May/June 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examinations have been withheld.

On Monday, WAEC announced the results of the 2025 WASSCE, revealing that the results of 192,089 candidates, which constitute 9.75 percent, were withheld due to suspected involvement in various forms of exam malpractice.

The viral document, dated August 4, 2025, and titled “Urgent notice to the following secondary schools regarding withheld results,” was signed by Dr. Florence Ajayi, Director of Examination Malpractice and Irregularities at WAEC Nigeria.

It stated that the results of candidates from the listed schools were withheld due to their alleged involvement in exam malpractice, instructing the principals of these schools to report to the WAEC Lagos Zonal Office within ten working days.

Additionally, the letter stated, “All school principals must appear before the WAEC Investigative Panel by August 16, 2025, with necessary documentation and the exam scripts of affected candidates (where necessary).”

The list included schools such as Babington Macaulay Junior Seminary in Ikorodu, Atlantic Hall in Epe, Top Faith International School in Uyo, Corona Secondary School in Agbara, Christ the King College in Onitsha, St. Louis Secondary School in Ondo, Charles Dale Memorial International School in Port Harcourt, Stella Maris College in Abuja, Divine Mercy Secondary School in Asaba, Federal Government Girls’ College in Calabar, Holy Rosary College in Enugu, and St. Theresa’s Catholic College in Oke-Ado, Ibadan.

However, WAEC clarified on its official social media account, @waecnigeria, on Tuesday, that the list should be disregarded as it did not originate from its official channels.

WAEC’s statement read, “Please ignore any messages listing schools whose results have allegedly been canceled. Furthermore, WAEC will never request any examination center to present candidates’ scripts to the office. How would they obtain them?

“Do not trust any messages that are not published on our official accounts or recognized media.”

The results announced on Monday by Dr. Amos Dangut, Head of WAEC National Office, indicated that 38.32 percent of the 1,969,313 candidates who took the exam received credits and above in five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.

This year’s results reflected a significant drop of 33.8 percent compared to the 72.12 percent pass rate achieved in the 2024 WASSCE.

Dangut attributed the notable decline in performance to the newly introduced anti-malpractice measures.
