WAEC Results Portal Crash Sparks Outrage
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has faced renewed criticism following the temporary closure of its result checker portal on Wednesday evening, which it attributed to “technical difficulties.”
The announcement, shared via WAEC’s official X account, @waecnigeria, ignited further backlash as numerous Nigerians continue to express frustration over the dismal performance seen in the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination, especially in English Language.
“WAEC informs the public that the result checker portal @waecdirect.org will be temporarily inaccessible due to technical difficulties.
“Nevertheless, the Council is diligently working to ensure candidates can access their results within the next 24 hours. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused,” the message stated.
The notice on Wednesday has intensified speculation and public dissatisfaction regarding the examination body’s reliability, particularly after Monday’s revelation that only 38.32 percent of the 1,969,313 candidates who participated in the 2025 WASSCE achieved credits and above in five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, representing the lowest performance in a decade.
On various social media platforms, numerous candidates and concerned Nigerians blamed WAEC for logistical failures, particularly regarding the delayed English Language paper, which reportedly was held late into the evening at many centres on May 28.
On X (formerly Twitter), several users shared images of results displaying credit passes in other subjects yet failures in English, demanding a thorough review of the English Language examinations.
Mark Imohi tweeted at @sikimark, “It is worrying that the English exam, which was postponed at centres across the country, is now leading to widespread failures. If JAMB could make improvements, we hope you (WAEC) will take steps to rectify this situation. It was a national embarrassment.”
Another user, @_samad1, expressed, “We took the exam at 8 pm. We were given only one hour or 30 minutes to answer questions meant for two and a half hours. There was no power, and everyone was rushing to leave. Please reconsider.”
Some candidates expressed hope that changes in scores could occur once the portal is reopened.
“When the portal is back online, you’ll see something surprising,” tweeted Daniel Ebitimi (@ebitimi_da15726).
Others claimed deliberate manipulation and profit-making motives behind the poor grading.
“Just like JAMB, WAEC is jeopardizing the future of Nigerians. If the majority of the D’s, E’s, and F8’s awarded in English are reviewed, WAEC will face serious consequences,” @JayTrezy wrote.
Parents also joined the wave of dissatisfaction, voicing confusion over how students who excelled in other subjects could have performed poorly in English.
“My daughter achieved five A1’s and two B2’s, only to receive a D7 in English and have Physics withheld,” tweeted a parent, @Johnway11145073.
Another user, @DEYHOT_official, pleaded, “WAEC, I beg you, help us reevaluate the English Language exam. I cannot accept this result. I worked so hard to afford this exam, and now you have failed me. This result is impacting my future.”
Some even called for a complete recall of the 2025 results.
“We reject this year’s results, particularly in English and Maths. WAEC, please take the necessary actions to prevent mass protests,” @pastorbtdaniels tweeted.
The Teacher, @MarquizDejavex, commented, “Students took the English paper in the middle of the night, and yet WAEC failed them.”
King Jeporphs, @e_okwori, tweeted, “Students who were robbed of fair grades in English should tag the presidency and the Minister of Education to have an external body review the entire examination process.”
WAEC has yet to provide further clarification regarding the grading of the English Language or respond to the increasing demands for a reassessment of the impacted scripts.
