UI is Nigeria’s oldest and consistently highest-ranked university, and its College of Medicine is one of the most respected medical schools in West Africa.

This guide breaks down everything a prospective medical student needs to know, including how the Post UTME works now that JAMB 2026 results are out.

University of Ibadan Medicine and Surgery Programme Structure

The degree awarded is the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). It is a six-year programme that is fully accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and recognised internationally. University of Ibadan Medicine and Surgery graduates have gone on to practise in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, and beyond.

The six years are structured in three distinct phases:

Year 1: Preliminary Basic Sciences (12 months). This is your foundation year. You’ll cover core sciences: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and introductory Medical Sciences. Think of it as bridging the gap between secondary school and full medical training.

Years 2 & 3: Pre-Clinical Programme (18 months). Here you dive into the core basic medical sciences: Human Anatomy, Medical Biochemistry, and Human Physiology. These are the building blocks of everything that follows. Exams at the end of this phase are some of the most demanding in the programme.

Years 4, 5 & 6: Clinical Programme (42 months). This is where medicine comes alive. You’ll rotate through hospital wards, clinics, and operating theatres at the University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan, one of Nigeria’s busiest and most respected tertiary hospitals.

Clinical postings cover:

Internal Medicine (Medicine 1, 2 and 3)

Surgery

Obstetrics & Gynaecology

Paediatrics

Community Medicine

Psychiatry

Pathology

Pharmacology

After the six years, add one year of compulsory internship and one year of NYSC, and you’re looking at roughly eight years before you’re fully licensed to practise independently.

Admission Requirements for UI Medicine and Surgery

O’Level Requirements

You must have five credit passes at O’Level (WAEC, NECO, or NABTEB) obtained in one sitting. This is non-negotiable at UI, and two-sitting combinations are not accepted for Medicine and Surgery.

The required subjects are: English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Biology. Every single one must be a credit pass (minimum C6), and they must all appear on one result slip.

JAMB Score Requirement

The official general cut-off mark for UI is 200. But for University of Ibadan Medicine and Surgery, 200 is the floor, not the target.

In reality, If you scored below 280 in JAMB, you are unlikely to gain admission.

Scores between 290 – 309: You are in contention, but Post UTME performance will be critical.

310 and above: You are in a strong position heading into Post UTME.

Most candidates who eventually secure admission in Medicine at UI score 300 and above in JAMB.

How the UI Post UTME Works

Now that JAMB 2026 results are out, here’s what happens next:

Step 1: Eligibility Check. Only candidates who scored 200 and above in JAMB and chose UI as their first choice are eligible to apply for the Post UTME screening exercise. Check your JAMB result to confirm your eligibility.

Step 2: Post UTME Registration. Once UI announces the Post UTME portal opening, (watch the official UI website at ui.edu.ng and follow Exam Scholars for verified updates) you’ll register online, pay the screening fee, and print your exam slip. Do not pay through any third party or unofficial channel.

Step 3: The Screening Exam. UI Post UTME is a physical, written examination held on the UI main campus in Ibadan, unlike many universities that conduct online screenings. The exam tests you on the same subjects you registered for in JAMB: English, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. The Post UTME score is over 100.

Step 4: Aggregate Score Calculation. This is where it all comes together. UI uses a specific formula to calculate your final admission score.

How to Calculate University of Ibadan Aggregate Score

UI Aggregate Score = (JAMB Score ÷ 8) + (Post UTME Score ÷ 2)

Your JAMB score (over 400) is divided by 8 to give a score out of 50. Your Post UTME score (over 100) is divided by 2 to give another score out of 50. Both are added together for a total aggregate out of 100.

Example:

JAMB Score: 320, therefore, 320 ÷ 8 = 40

Post UTME Score: 80, therefore, 80 ÷ 2 = 40

Total Aggregate: 40 + 40 = 80

The official aggregate cut-off for UI Medicine and Surgery is 78.875. With over 10,000 qualified candidates competing annually, this is the most competitive undergraduate admission in Nigeria. Every single mark counts.

Direct Entry is possible. If you have two A-Level passes in Chemistry, Biology, and Physics (plus UTME requirements), you may apply via Direct Entry to skip Year 1. Check the UI admission portal for DE-specific requirements.

An MBBS from UI is recognised by major international medical councils, including those in the UK, US, and Canada.
