UNILAG Unveils 2024/2025 Admission Screening Dates and Comprehensive Criteria for Admitted Students

The University of Port Harcourt (UniPort) has expressed disbelief at the murder of Mr. Godwin Akpakpan, a 300-level computer science student, in an off-campus shooting incident.

As stated by Dr. Sammy Kpenu, the university’s public relations officer, the event, reportedly involving security personnel, took place outside the university grounds. The administration expressed its profound sorrow over the tragedy and extended condolences to the deceased’s family, friends, and classmates.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has threatened to take to the streets and close down all campuses in Rivers State if justice is not pursued.

NANS alleged that Akpakpan was taken into custody by individuals in police uniforms during a stop-and-search operation in Port Harcourt on April 16, 2024, and was subsequently shot during a confrontation between police officers and people in military attire.

Comrade Jokiel Gideon Chinonso, the chairman of NANS Rivers State Joint Campus Council, voiced his anger, stating, “None of the security forces involved is taking responsibility for the shot that reportedly killed Akpakpan. We demand an immediate inquiry into this alleged homicide and urge the appropriate authorities to hold the perpetrators accountable. If no action is taken, we will not hesitate to take over the streets and shut down all campuses in Rivers State.”

Chinonso emphasized the students’ resolve to fight for justice, adding, “We will not permit the lives of our peers to be taken without repercussions. We call for justice for Godwin Francis Akpakpan and his family.”

In its reaction, the university announced that it is working with relevant security agencies to explore the circumstances surrounding the student’s demise. “We anticipate that a comprehensive investigation will be carried out and that suitable measures will be enforced by justice and the rule of law,” the statement indicated.

The university administration urged students and the academic community to maintain composure and allow the investigations to unfold. It reassured that the institution remains dedicated to the safety, dignity, and welfare of all students and staff.
