JAMB Mass Failure: Don Blames Poor Preparation and Social Media Distractions
Prof. Okechukwu Nwaubani of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka’s Department of Social Science Education, has blamed applicants’ misuse of social media and inadequate preparation for the recent overwhelming failure in the Joint Matriculation Board’s (JAMB) 2025 exam.
In a chat with our correspondent in Nsukka on Thursday, Nwaubani made this statement about the recent significant failures in the JAMB exam.
According to him, young people use social media for frivolous negative purposes rather than for academic improvement.
These applicants received lower than 200 on the most recent JAMB because many of them spend all day on social media and the internet engaging in pointless, detrimental activities that have no bearing on their academic performance.
“They believed in cheating during the exam instead of dedicating time to study independently or enroll in nearby exam preparation centers,” he claimed.
The educator claimed he was not surprised by the widespread failure because he had anticipated it when JAMB eliminated all exam-cheating opportunities.
Closing these gaps and strengthening security in all locations have revealed candidates who profit from exam cheating, which has led to their widespread failure.
Because your degree of preparation shows in how well you perform on the test, a well-conducted exam is like the computer jargon that states, “What you gabbage in is what you gabbage out,” he added.
Nwaubani, the Director of UNN’s Curriculum Development and Instructional Materials Center (CUDIMAC), praised the JAMB leadership for their dedication to making sure that only those who studied thoroughly for the test “come out in flying colors” and encouraged them to keep up the good work.
“Those who are serious will ‘burn their midnight lamp’ in the 2026 exam since there is no room for cheating again, now that they know that exam cheating no longer pays,” he stated.
However, the don accused some parents of helping their kids cheat on exams by paying them a lot of money to enroll in “miracle centers,” where exam authorities are typically compromised, but this time it didn’t work.
“Parents who are doing this should stop because they are destroying their children’s future.
“As parents, try to inculcate in your children the virtues of diligence, faith in God, and honesty; these will help them to bring honor to the family instead of shame and disgrace,” Nwaubani continued.
Out of the 1,955,069 applicants that took the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), more than 1.5 million received a score of less than 200, according to the results just released by JAMB.
