FG Halts Bilateral Education Scholarships for 5 Years — Students Affected Nationwide!
The Bilateral Education Agreement (BEA) program would be suspended for five years, according to Education Minister Tunji Alausa, to support student development, put welfare first, and fortify Nigeria’s educational system.
The ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade, announced this information in a statement last weekend in Abuja.
After a thorough analysis of academic programs offered abroad, he spoke.
According to Alausa, all courses offered overseas under the BEA system are now available and, in many cases, better developed within Nigerian institutions. The decision was made after a thorough examination.
“Every course that our citizens take overseas has been thoroughly examined. “All of them are now available here at home,” he said.
Although the suspension encourages Nigerians to pursue their education domestically, he clarified, it does not preclude parents from privately funding their children’s studies abroad.
“We must treat every citizen fairly and equally. To send kids overseas for education that they can now receive at home, frequently of higher quality, the government currently spends a lot of money on flights, stipends, and other expenses,” he said.
He explained that BEA partner nations that provide fully paid scholarships to Nigerians will continue to be welcomed by the federal government.
“These scholarships must be provided at no cost to the Nigerian government and must cover living expenses, healthcare, travel, tuition, and a minimum monthly stipend of $500.”
Alausa also emphasized that other government-funded scholarship programs, including the Presidential Scholarship for former NYSC corps members, the Education Bursary Award for undergraduates studying education, and the Nigerian Scholarship Award for students attending public universities and polytechnics, will remain unaffected by the moratorium.
He also emphasized the enhanced Nigerian Student Loan Program, which offers students attending nearby universities more substantial financial aid.
Alausa promised that until they finish their education and return to Nigeria, all existing BEA scholarship recipients would continue to receive full government support.
He reaffirmed, “We stand by the promises made to our students abroad.”
In order to ensure that no dream is postponed or abandoned, he reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to increasing local scholarship possibilities and assisting all Nigerians in pursuing their educational goals.
