FG launches the 278th university in Nigeria.

Ebonyi State University of ICT, Science, and Technology, Oferekpe, has been approved by the Nigerian government through the National Universities Commission, or NUC, to become the 278th university in the nation.

This information was revealed by NUC Executive Secretary Prof. Abdullahi Ribadu on Thursday when he sent Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru a letter acknowledging the new university.

According to Ribadu, the university is now ranked 278th in the Nigerian University System and 66th among Nigeria’s state universities.

He said a copy of the recognition letter will be submitted to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), and the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).

However, the head of the NUC disclosed that the intuition will not start classes until the required resource verification is complete.

As the Commission, we would want to express our readiness and willingness to assist this fledgling intuition.

We must clarify, though, that a letter of acknowledgment does not signify the beginning or continuation of academic pursuits. The process known as resource verification will still need to be carried out.

When the intuition is prepared, the Commission will visit; it will be invited to examine the current situation, the infrastructure, the classrooms, the library, and the staffing conditions.

Following that, the Commission will approve the start of academic operations. The fact that this intuition is now the 66th state university is significant,” he stated.

The governor of Ebonyi State responded by stating that the institution was established in 2021 to expand access to higher education.

“This intuition was established to increase access to high-quality, reasonably priced tertiary education, especially for state Indigenous people, and to provide all people with the opportunity to pursue higher education to meet the state’s and the country’s needs for technological manpower, particularly in light of the rapidly changing global landscape due to the tech-driven phenomenon,” he stated.
